A male friend of mine once complained about a new shirt – because it didn’t have a pocket! As a woman I had no sympathy. Women’s skirts or pants often had no pockets for most of last century and into this one. No wonder we adopted jeans with five pockets. I hadn’t really thought about pockets for a while, until Carmel showed us her pocket project and introduced us to Lucy Lockett.
In the 17th century someone very clever, of course a woman, created a pocket stitched to a sash and tied around a woman’s waist. It was worn under skirts as a ‘portable’ pocket. The pocket was immortalised in a nursery rhyme with the first line reading ‘Lucy Lockett lost her pocket…’
I had always thought that when my grandmother said ‘put it in your Lucy Lockett’ it was rhyming slang for ‘pocket.’ She must have learned about Lucy Lockett from the nursery rhyme. Amazing what you learn at U3A programs. Look at Carmel’s pocket project and the wonderful Lucy Lockett that she has made and embroidered.

The very popular Home Gardening group is always active – planting, pruning and picking the results. Last month the group brought along samples of their hard work to show in
the flower competition. From anemones and lillies to leucospermum were entered. The winners were awarded with a perpetual trophy. The group meets on the first Monday of the month, from 1-3. Check it out.

Our members gathering in September was a great success. New members were particularly encouraged to come, meet other members and talk to facilitators to find out about their programs. It was surprising how many members were recognised from their involvement in their neighbourhood, as dog owners and walkers or as regulars at local coffee shops. Conversations didn’t stop and the list of suggestions for new activities kept growing. Some of the suggestions were – movement, some writing, attending music performances, bird watching, nature trips, more visits to galleries and exhibitions, more languages…..
